Get the best with alternative training philosophy

I have had a longer talk with Erik Kubon Halvorsen about development culture, club development and alternative training. Halvorsen has been a youth coach at several clubs, and has both fostered national players, increased recruitment and reduced the drop-off where he has been.

In order to give the handball players a wider training offer, Halvorsen chooses a different strategy than normal. For where many people think that more handball should be trained to create early development, Halvorsen chooses to focus on more alternative training and an inclusive environment. He does this by letting the players try their hand at different sports, and that at the same time several social gatherings are organized.

Beyond the usual handball training, Halvorsen draws impulses from other sports and environments. The goal is to create a safe and happy environment with a focus on coping.

Kickboxing, padel, athletics with a focus on speed and running technique and basic training with the body as a load are just some of the many alternative workouts that are carried out.

“Everyone can evolve, regardless of level, and genetic prerequisites. With alternative training, you can create a sense of mastery for everyone!” says Halvorsen.

Beyond the alternative training, cohesion is created with cookie baking, betting competitions, time keeping in the slide in the swimming pool, mountain walks and much more.

Pictures say more than 1,000 words it is said. For me, there is no doubt that these girls look happy.

The result for Halvorsen's team

  • Significantly reduced dropout
  • Increased recruitment
  • NM Titles
  • National team players both junior and senior

I wonder, therefore. What is the reason why no more sports clubs and teams are doing this?

The transfer of learning through varied training in childhood and adolescence is an important prerequisite for the more specialized training that comes later.

This works! Try something new too, right?

Facts about alternative and all-round training

  • More likely to reach the elite
  • Increases cognitive motor ability
  • More likely to choose the sport you would prefer
  • Reduces the risk of injury
  • Reduces dropout
  • It is not crucial that the sports are similar to each other. It's all about learning from other sports
